Big Boats

With repairs done, and an all-star crew, Groupama 3 is headed to Istanbul.

Tracking and video here:

[cammas-groupama.geovoile.com]

Highlights:

The video segment when they sail through the straights of Gibraltar.

24/3: their sunrise at ca.30 knots, into the Aegean.

------------

The Full-screen version of same videos here: [www.cammas-groupama.com]

Remarks by Cammas after their trip to Istanbul, he says: "The grandeur of the landscape was something we had an abundance of, particularly as we approached Greece with a superb sunrise over the islands; it was fabulous. Not many people on board knew this region. We had a good sail yesterday before entering the Dardanelles, which was nice: in the Aegean Sea we gybed around the islands at 30 knots. It was impossible to close your eyes to the landscape."

Excellent video - Banque Populaire

There's no music, no chit-chat (all the more amazing, given they're French) and just focused big-boat driving here. Put it up fullscreen.

Paul Larsen (Vestas Sailrocket, Team Philips) posted this video on Youtube.

Saw it yesterday, was dumbfounded. The builders of the boat, when they saw it, must have been ... somewhat traumatized ?

Take this to a wind tunnel, turn on a couple of fire hoses, and then press 'play':

"Alain Gautier and Michel Desjoyeaux frolicking in Biscay prior to 1999 TJV. (Transat Jaques Vabre) They capsized shortly after the start. There is nothing in offshore sailing that comes close to these boats. Too 'hairy' for most. The first song is 'street symphony' by Monica... the second is of course by Tears for Fears."

Jada. Gleder meg til det også!

Glitzy Froggy Flerskrog-Fluff !

I give this intro-video a score of 8. As they say in eurovision; 'Huit points'

(select the Foncia video) [www.sensationocean.com]

Usually the music reeks on these videos, like the Gitana/Rothschild-vids with cathedral choir music - I will not even link to it, it is so bad.

Ravussin is watch captain, helm, and media man on Groupama right now (see top of thread).

The beautiful name of Brocéliande unfortunately ended up being Stena Sovcomflot...
How's THAT for being abusive to your boat !

- Mise à l'eau : août 1997
- ex Brocéliande, skipper : A.Gautier 1997-1999
- ex Foncia, skipper : A.Gautier 2000-2001
- ex TechnoMarine Match TV , skipper : S.Ravussion 2002
- ex Banque Covefi 2, skipper : S.Ravussin 2004
- ex Stena Sovcomflot, skippers : Bruno Peyron/S.Ravussin 2005

Here is a video which is completely unrelated, and insane:

EDIT: that video has disappeared now, but here's another nice one, same kind of thing:

Here at the always-busy flerskrogdotorg Forum, we never fail to bring you the latest news long before all the other sailing sites wake up and follow our example !

This.... Is pretty cool! And it is happening now now now.

\ Glad I'm somewhere else!

"Oman Sail’s A100 trimaran ‘Majan’ has been battling hurricane force winds in the Southern Ocean on leg 3 of the Indian Ocean 5 Capes Race en route to the next stop over in Fremantle, Australia. The six-man crew led by Paul Standbridge including new recruit Sidney Gavignet and two Omani crew, who are tracing out this new course ahead of the official race in 2012, have had their mettle tested to the limit in these ferocious conditions."

And, not to forget those Prima Donnas on Groupama3 ! At the moment they are pulling the move that might give them a BIG jump on the Jules Verne Record - they are cutting the corner on Bruno Peyron's track by heading east and their speed is now given as 32knots, when Orange was doing 10.

... Northward bound they've not pulled down their pants and waggled their asses at the camera, yet! (southbound it was on Feb 5th)

I guess they either got a diplomatic warning from their wives, or decided it was bad luck!

Or both?

Aside from that, it would look real ~French~, if they then came in, late...

[cammas-groupama.geovoile.com]

Edit: The day (Wednesday)is not over yet, and it looks like they will today have made a ca. 500 nm gain on Orange's 'virtual' position.

Right now they're 1213 nautical miles ahead of Oranges position. About on day left until finish. Seems like we'll have a new round the world record set by Banque Populaire!

Edit: Yes, the name of the boat was a silly typing error. The boat is of course "Groupama 3".

This boat is more green than blue, Stein, you have worn out your laptop screen! BanquePop spent the last months agonizing over the question of if the weather patterns looked good enough to break Orange's time to Cape of Good Hope - they never left Brest, even while G3 repaired, came home, and started a second time. BP gave up the 'code red' standby 3 weeks ago and took the boat back to L'Orient.

And it deserves mention, that their video from the transatlantic record is terribly boring! Trois points!

Groupama 3 Jules Verne
Posted by: Conrad (IP Logged)
Date: March 20, 2010 10:49PM

At this moment they see the lighthouse, less than 4 miles ahead.

They're doing about 30 knots.

Must be quite delightful for the crew!

Edit: We were 9 minutes behind the news!

Edit 2: Since they have made no Tweets since Cape Horn, how can they expect us to be informed? (can't manage a Tweet between Cape Horn and Ushant/Oessant? Twitter needs to give that team some money!)

Here it came in, a minute ago:
Ushant at 21h 40' 45" TU: 48 days 7 hours 44 minutes! The Jules Verne's Trophy now belongs to the ten men of Groupama 3!

[twitter.com]

Edit 3: And on the tracking page, the record time is given to the second!

48 jours, 07 heures, 44 minutes, 52 secondes. (Orange was 50j/16h/20m/04s)

Poor Banque Populaire will now have an even more difficult time deciding when to leave harbor, come November!

Edit 4: And Bruno Peyron! He still has to sit on his virtual boat for another two-three days! HA!

They finished over three hours ago, and look to now be hove-to a few miles off the coast while waiting for the PR-event tomorrow morning.
What do you think the chances are, that one or more boats have joined them and there is a pretty good party going on, as everyone lifts and bobs with the sea off Ushant?

Hope they wake up in time for the harbor parade!

Fantastisk rekord dette her!

Nydelige helikopterbilder, passende musikk.

Now back to the topic... sort of. The Dragonfly 35 is perhaps not what we meant by 'big boat', but in this video it doesn't really matter!

This video shows a Lagoon 380 arriving at Vanuatu in the South Pacific. Wait for the scenes at the end where they go up on an active volcano! I was on one like this once, and the scale and impressiveness of such a thing is hard to describe; but this Hi-def video gives a good idea.

The sailors here are an American couple sailing on their 'Honeymoon' (name of the boat, also), now 14 months into their trip. They do a nice job on their blog.

They can both be hot and impressive, and they can both... well let's leave it there. :-)

Båtene brukt i The Thomas Crown Affair var ProSail 40 båter.
